The fish typically has a body depth at the 6th dorsal spine that is usually less than 3 times its standard length (SL). In adults, the spine at the corner of the preopercle is reduced. The dorsal fin has 10 spines and 13–14 soft rays, while the anal fin has 3 spines and 13–15 soft rays. There are 46–53 vertical scale rows, counted diagonally from the dorsal fin origin to the anus. The long and pointed soft dorsal and anal fins are notable features. The coloration includes a reddish silvery or pale yellowish head and body, with grey mottling. The iris of the eye is pink to bright red. The dorsal, anal, and caudal fins are either pink with reddish-brown streaks in the membranes or yellowish with dusky streaks. A black spot at the base of the pelvic fins is usually present.
