Round, smooth, and velvety to the touch because of its fine hairs. The reddish-brown carapace is usually 6-10 cm wide. A characteristic that sets this species apart is brilliant red and prominent eyes. Huge and strong, with a slightly uneven chelae size. There are sharp, serrated edges on the claws. The fifth set of legs is flattened and paddle-like, helping with swimming, whereas the first four pairs are designed for walking. Due to their adaption, they are referred to as “swimming crabs.” Ten pointed spines on either side of the carapace, situated between the eyes and the edge, are present. The ventral side of the carapace is typically lighter in color, such as white or pale yellow, whereas the dorsal side is reddish-brown.
