The head and body exhibit depression and the membrane behind the last dorsal fin spine is sizable. The gill opening is located dorsally. Preopercular spine possesses two curved points on its dorsal edge and a robust antrose lower spine. There are 19–23 rays in the pectoral fin. The coloration includes a marbled or variegated pattern on the head and body, a large black spot on the 1st dorsal fin and transparent 2nd dorsal, anal and caudal fins with a broad blackish margin. The pelvic fins are blackish in the middle.
