The carapace is smooth or somewhat grainy in texture, and it is broad and almost spherical. Its shape is generally relatively flattened or slightly convex, and it is wider than it is long. Generally smooth, the carapace has a few sporadic tubercles or granules. The carapace and legs are usually brown to reddish-brown in hue, with lighter patches or mottling on occasion. Strong and frequently asymmetrical, the chelipeds typically have one larger claw than the other. The fingers are typically darker or have black tips, while the claws are generally smooth with a few ridges or granules. The walking legs have a silky texture, are somewhat long and slender, and may have small setae covering them. Leg tips have points on them to help with surface grip. The tiny eyes are situated on brief stalks that can retract into their orbits. The short antennae are situated in the space between the eyes. The large, visibly segmented abdomen is folded beneath the thorax.
