Elegant, medium-sized tern with a black head and a thin, yellow-orange bill. Similar in appearance to the Great Crested Tern; however, the Lesser Crested has a comparatively longer and more orange bill. Moreover, observe its gray upperwing, which sets it apart from Sandwich Tern. If observed closely, the gray tail and rump can be diagnostic. Observe lifeless legs, dark-centered secondaries, and a feeble upperwing pattern on juveniles.
