The fish has a deep, compressed body with a largely naked anterior part of the cheek. It features two dorsal fins with 3 spines and 24–27 rays, an anal fin with 23–25 rays, and a terminal mouth. There’s a tympanum present, and small spines are found in 5 or 6 rows on the side and a short distance anterior to the caudal peduncle. A prominent groove extends anteriorly from the front of the eye for about 1 eye diameter. The caudal peduncle is compressed, and the mouth is terminal. The coloration is light greyish-yellow, with darker yellowish-grey scale centers. The anterior and ventral parts of the head are orange-yellow, and the margins of the soft dorsal, anal, and caudal fins are also orange-yellow.
