Large, distinctive white wading bird with a bill resembling a spatula. Adults have a bright breast patch and a short crest. The first year’s bill is paler, and when it flies, its fine black wingtips are apparent. Unlike egrets, which have a more vertical stance, sleeping birds have a horizontal posture with a protruding neck. When sleeping, they may be mistaken for egrets, but their overall appearance is thicker and stockier.
