Hair follicles arranged in noticeable, rounded bumps cover the dorsal ridge, which extends from the blowhole to the tip of the jaw, as well as the upper and bottom borders of the mouth. More than two thirds of the way down the back is where the dorsal fin is located. On each side of the upper jaw, there are 350–370 blackish-brown baleen plates. The tips of the broad flukes are pointy and serrated. A distinct median notch exists.
