Description:
The fish has a very deep and compressed body, with a strongly humped back, and the body depth measuring 1.7–1.9 times the standard length. The head and breast are scaleless. In terms of coloration, adults have a greyish back and silvery belly, with close-set faint bars on the back and sides. There is a dark brown saddle on the caudal peduncle, and the axil of the pectoral fins is grey to black. Additionally, the margin of the soft dorsal fin is black. In juveniles (5–7 cm TL), thin, closely arranged, grey vertical lines descend from the back to about midheight, and the membrane between the anal fin spines is conspicuously yellow.
