This fish species has a body depth measuring 2.6–2.9 times the standard length (SL) for specimens ranging from 11 to 55 cm SL. The preopercle features fine serrations, with the serrae at the angle not being enlarged. In adults, the dorsal head profile is indented at the eyes and distinctly convex from there to the origin of the dorsal fin. The dorsal fin consists of 11 spines and 14–15 soft rays. The pectoral fin has 18–20 rays, and the caudal fin is rounded. The lateral line comprises 52–58 scales, and lateral body scales are smooth, with auxiliary scales. The overall coloration is generally brownish with numerous small dark spots on the body and fins, as well as large irregular dark blotches on the head and body, overlaying smaller dark spots. Additionally, there is a brownish-black saddle-blotch on the top of the caudal peduncle.
