Body is moderately robust and not very deep. The hind tip of the maxilla is visible when the mouth is closed and both fins are well-scaled at the base with ctenoid scales. The origin of the first dorsal fin is closer to the caudal fin base than to the snout tip. There are 25–29 (commonly 26) scales in the longitudinal series and 8–10 scales in the transverse series. Head and body exhibit a silvery coloration with dorsal darkening. Scales on the upper sides have brown blotches, creating the appearance of longitudinal bands. The anal and caudal fins are yellowish while the pectoral fin is entirely black in small fish.
