Description:
The breeding adult is characterized by a dark, smoky gray body and contrasting white cheeks under a black crown, which might resemble broad white “whiskers” when in flight. The juvenile’s back is darkly-checkered, and the nonbreeding plumage is pale silvery gray overall with a faded shadow of the cap.
