Head is shorter than the distance between the origin of the dorsal fin and the origin of the upper caudal fin lobe. The upper jaw cannot protrude, and the jaws are either of equal length or the lower jaw is longer. There are 28–35 scales before the dorsal fin. Pelvic fins are inserted closer to the hind margin of the head than to the origin of the lower caudal fin lobe. Pectoral fins are dark brown, the dorsal fin features a large black spot and the pelvic fins are pale (dark in juveniles). The dorsal fin itself is grey.
