The body of the species is moderately deep compared to other members of the genus. It features a single postmaxillary process and small, conical teeth in the jaws, vomer, and palatines. The anal fin is characterized by 3 spines and 11 rays, occasionally 10 or 12. The supratemporal band of scales is continuous at the dorsal midline.
Regarding coloration, the caudal fin, upper caudal peduncle, and posterior portion of the back are yellow. The upper body, where not yellow, appears greyish-blue. The lower sides and belly are white or pinkish. The axil and upper base of the pectoral fins are black, and the dorsal fin is yellow posteriorly and greyish-blue anteriorly.
