Description:
The pelvic fin is fused to create a suction or adhesive disk. There is either one or two dorsal fins, with the spinous dorsal fin containing 2-17 flexible spines, distinct from the soft spines. The body may or may not have scales. Teeth come in different sizes, typically small and conical. There are five branchiostegal rays.
