Every 0.3–2.5 cm, the thallus sub dichotomously forks; the branches are terete, glabrous, 0.5–1.5 mm broad, and infrequently jointed consistently. Epilithic, holdfast discoid, 1-3 mm in diameter. The cortex is made up of three to four layers of inflated cells that are slightly longer than broad, and is formed by the formation of a medulla of longitudinal filaments that give rise to radiating, dichotomously branched filaments. Campanulate rhodoplasts with a central pyrenoid. There is calcification in the cortex. light crimson to gray-red in hue.
