The plants have a flattened appearance and come in shades ranging from deep red to a lighter red, measuring approximately 4 to 5 centimeters in length from their base. They exhibit a branching pattern where the branches repeatedly split in a distichous (opposite, two-ranked) manner, with branches extending outward in an alternating fashion. At the base of the branches, there is a layer of bark, and the small branches split dichotomously, with pointed tips. The main axis of these plants occasionally divides into a few sparse branches, which are long and slightly twisted, and the secondary branches on these main axes display a pinnate to irregular branching pattern.
