They are anchored by a disc-shaped holdfast. The cortex measures 3-5 cells in width and consists of outer cells oriented perpendicular to the surface and inner cells that are oval-shaped and eventually become star-shaped. The medulla contains mostly transversely oriented filaments, with refractive ganglionic cells being present. The edges and surface of the blades are densely covered with outgrowths. These outgrowths vary in size, ranging from several centimeters to a few millimeters, and are repeatedly divided, giving them a narrow shape with pointed tips. These plants are of a light rose-red to medium red color, having a leafy and mucilaginous nature.
