The fish has an oblong body, with a depth of 3.0–3.3 times the standard length. It has 35–40 lateral line scales, plus 3–4 scales on the caudal fin base. The pectoral fins are short, not reaching to the anal fin origin. The 2nd and 3rd anal fin spines are slender and short. There are 3–4 (usually 3½) scale rows between the lateral line and the 5th dorsal spine. The coloration is silvery, with a trace of pale olive above the lateral line. Young individuals may have 7–8 faint dusky bars on the sides of the body, which are absent in older fish. There is a prominent black tip to the spinous part of the dorsal fin, usually confined to the distal part of the membrane between the second and fifth spines, but sometimes continuing as a black margin along the whole dorsal fin.
