Description:
The fish has an oval and strongly compressed body, with a depth of 1.2–1.6 times the standard length. The teeth are flattened and tricuspid, with the middle cusp much longer than the other cusps. In adults, the pelvic fins are very small or absent. The dorsal fin has 8 spines and 27–30 soft rays, while the anal fin has 3 spines and 27–30 soft rays. Adult individuals are silvery, with the tips of the dorsal and anal fin lobes appearing yellow, dusky yellow, or blackish. Juveniles are dusky silver with two curved dark stripes across the head.
