Description:
It has elongated and dorsoventrally flattened body; adapted for burying in sand or mud.Head is large, broad, and upward-facing with eyes located on top. Mouth is large, nearly vertical, with fringed lips and venomous spines on the cleithrum and operculum.Skin scaleless or nearly so; often with mucous covering. Brownish body with darker mottling or blackish spots. Electric organ present behind the eyes in some species of Uranoscopus, possibly functional in U. fuscomaculatus.
