Shell large, globose-ovate with quite a low conical spire and moderately deep suture, rather thick base produced. Outer sculpture of evenly spaced, flat spiral ribs, with finely raised axial lines on the early spiral whorls. Spiral ribs 4 or 5 in number on the penultimate whorl, about 20 on the O body whorl. Aperture wide; outer lip somewhat thickened and reflected, with 15-17 pairs of denticles along its inner side; recurved siphonal canal. Small, thin, glossy and twisted columellar shield over a very narrow umbilicus; thin parietal callus. Colour: outer surface creamy-white with a dark brown apex; 3 or 4 broad brown spiral bands on the body whorl, as wide as 1.5 to 2 ribs. Aperture white, with the external brown banding showing through. Size: maximum shell length 120 mm, commonly about 100 mm; average shell length, ma width, aperture length and width measure about 86, sh 67, 73 and 38 mm, respectively.
