Description:
The maxilla extends at least to the anterior margin of the eye. There are no gill rakers on the 1st gill arch. Both the upper and lower gill arch have rough platelets without distinct spines. Caudal fin is forked in small juveniles and double emarginate in adults with 75–87 pored lateral line scales. Adult individuals exhibit a dusky silver color, appearing bluish-black dorsally with approximately 20 oblique dark bars on the upper half of the body that do not extend across the lateral line. Caudal fin is black with white tips and there may be some black blotches on the underside of the posterior body. Juveniles display a series of large dark blotches irregularly arranged on the sides of the body.
