The thallus is flat and thin, dividing in an irregular or somewhat dichotomous pattern, typically branching 2-4 times to create spreading blades. These blades are elongated, linear, and lanceolate in shape, narrowing towards a sharp base and tapering upwards to an acute or rounded tip. There is no midrib or veins present. Short spines are situated along the edges of the lobes, with a greater density on the lower part of the thallus. The cortical cells are roughly quadrangular, pigmented, and contain numerous chloroplasts. In contrast, the medullary cells are colorless and arranged irregularly. The plants typically have a color that ranges from greenish to light brown.
