Classification:
Kingdom: Chromista
Phylum: Bacillariophyta
Class: Bacillariophyceae
Order: Thalassiosirales
Family: Thalassiosiraceae
Description:
The cells form chains, connected by chitinous threads stemming from a centrally positioned strutted process. When viewed from the side, these cells are either disc-shaped or rectangular, and their length along the pervalvar axis ranges from 0.5 to 2 times the diameter of the valve. The valves themselves are circular, with diameters spanning from 7 to 60 micrometers, and they can be flat or slightly convex. The areolation, or the pattern of small openings, is off-center and appears coarse. In the central region, there are about 5-10 areolae per 10 micrometers, while closer to the margin, there are 6-12 areolae in the same distance. The strutted processes are trifultate and operculate, possessing internal extensions. There is one process in an off-center position, and there is also a marginal ring of processes, but these are not visible under a light microscope. A solitary labiate process is present, located away from the margin, and it is internally flattened and parallel to the margin.
