The body is highly compressed, lacking scutes and caudal peduncle grooves with 21–27 gill rakers on the 1st gill arch. The scales on the midbody below the lateral line are partially embedded and sharply lanceolate. In terms of coloration, adults exhibit a double series of 6–8 dusky roundish blotches both above and below the lateral line. The distal half of the dorsal fin lobe is heavily pigmented while the anal fin lobe appears white or pale yellow. In larger individuals, the interradial membrane of several anterior rays may be black.
