The abdomen has a distinct keel formed by 30–32 scutes. Scales before the dorsal fin are paired and overlap. There are 41–68 (typically fewer than 60) lower gill rakers. Scales have somewhat developed extensions at their posterior median. The pelvic fin consists of 1 unbranched and 7 branched rays. Upper part of the body and head is blue-green, transitioning to silvery white below. The flanks have a silvery hue and there are no spots on the body. A dark spot is present at the origin of the dorsal fin, while the other fins are predominantly pale yellow.
