This is a unicellular diatom with a rod-like shape, found either individually or in brief chains. Its diameter can vary between 2.5 to 170 micrometers. These diatoms possess a cell wall composed of silica and consist of two conical or slightly conical valves, which are also referred to as a frustule. One end typically features spine-like projections and is often equipped with otaria and claspers. Reproduction occurs asexually by dividing the frustule into two equal parts, and the original size is restored following sexual reproduction.
