Large but light-bodied shearwater with a long, wedge-shaped tail that is frequently held contracted in a point, and rather broad wings. Easy buoyant glides and firm wingbeats characterize a leisurely flying. Variable plumage: while most birds have gray-brown upperparts and pale underparts, some have dark brown overall plumage. Note the short grayish bill and the pale scaly edgings to the rear feathers.
