The head shield is rough, and the dorsomedian head groove is lanceolate. In juveniles, the supraoccipital process is triangular, while in adults, it becomes ovate. The mouth is terminal, and there are two patches of granular teeth on each side of the palate, arranged longitudinally. The anterior patch is smaller and ovate, while the posterior patch is elongate. Gill rakers on the first arch number 13-15, and there are three pairs of barbels. The body is reddish-brown to charcoal-blue above, with iridescent silvery-grey on the sides.
