This diatom is a single-celled pennate species with a softly curved shape that resembles an elongated “S” shape. It typically contains 2-4 elongated chloroplasts. The valves are relatively flat and exhibit a gentle sigmoid or almost straight form. They have a lanceolate outline, a raphe that is straight or gently sigmoid and centrally located. There are three striae systems present: one that runs transversely and two oblique ones. Inside the cell, there are usually two to four elongated chloroplasts, often highly convoluted, and each chloroplast has numerous pyrenoids. Reproduction occurs asexually through cell division.
