Description:
This species has an elongate and robust body, with a depth that is 2.9–3.9 times in standard length (SL). The preopercle is broadly rounded, featuring three large, ventrally-directed spines along the lower half. The gill raker at the angle is shorter than the gill filaments at the angle. The caudal fin is emarginate (truncate in juveniles), and there are 15–16 pectoral fin rays. The anal fin spines are weak. The coloration includes a head, body, and fins that range from brown to orange-red, adorned with numerous small dark-edged blue spots. Adults may have elongated spots on the head and sides of the body, with those on the body usually being vertically elongate. Spots are few or absent on the ventral part of the body, and the edge of the orbit often appears blue.
