The shell is small to medium in size, compressed, relatively inflated, inequvalve, and subquadrate in outline. It is rather thin with a short, ill-defined posterior ear, and the anterior margin protrudes slightly. The outline is almost quadrate, meaning that it is square-shaped, higher than long, and the dorsal margin is longer than the body of the shell. The posterior margin is slightly concave. The outer surface of the shell is sculptured with densely set, appressed and flattened imbricating concentric scales and moderately small, radially projecting spines directed towards the margins. The hinge line is straight, with 2 small teeth in each valve. The ligament is in a triangular depression. The margins are spiny. The color of the shell is variable, usually reddish-brown with 6-8 darker radial rays, radiating from the umbones to the shell margins.
