The plants have a color that ranges from a pale pinkish to a reddish hue. They possess a membranous texture, with lobed and encrusted features. They are anchored by single-celled rhizoids originating from the lower surface, and there is a presence of calcium carbonate between the rhizoids and in the underlying mucous layer. This calcareous content makes the plant brittle. The thallus is composed of hypothelial cells, which are not distinctly defined, and vertical rows of perithalial filaments. When viewed in radial section, the marginal cells are as tall as the hypothallic cells.
