The plants are a deep shade of red and create uneven, encrusted patches that can be circular or lobed. These patches may partially lift at the edges and are found alongside lighter, bleached coralline algal, bryozoan crusts, and sponges. There is calcification at the lower surface. The upright filament cells are elongated, with the lowest cell typically being more erect but having similar dimensions to the basal layer cell, and they are centrally pit-connected. However, there is no internal calcification.
