Description:
The fish exhibits a dark wavy line along its upper side, separating a pale brown back from the whitish midsection. It features 9-10 reddish-brown vertical bars with black centers along the lower sides, small blackish spots on the outer third of the anal fin, and a white blotch through the middle of the caudal fin. The fish has an orange chin and fine black spots on the cheek. In males, there is a distinct ocellus above the gill opening, while females and juveniles have a smaller, diffuse spot. Juveniles also retain a patch of small cheek spots into adulthood.
