Hermit crabs are reddish or brownish in color. They have a bizarre appearance, as their soft abdomen is twisted to fit into the coils of a gastropod shell. They have two pincers on the first pair of walking legs, with the right pincer being larger than the left. Both pincers have a rough, granular surface.
