The cells have varying shapes, such as being spherical, oval, or hemispherical. They are not tightly packed and measure approximately 2.3-3.0 mm by 2.6-3 mm. These cells form flat, independent colonies with a single layer of cells. They are arranged in either loose or dense perpendicular rows, creating a grid-like pattern, and are surrounded by a fine, usually hard-to-see mucilage. Reproduction occurs through fission, with cell division happening in only two directions.
