Cells typically exhibit a subcylindrical shape, with a width greater than their height. These cells are organized in chain-like structures resembling a string of beads, held together by mucilage pads. The development of linking spines is somewhat limited, although cells may occasionally connect in pairs or groups of three through their girdles. The valve surface is flat and features small spines or granules. The mantle runs parallel to the pervalvar axis, with a slight curvature toward the valve surface, and a distinct collar is not present. Labiate processes are distributed across the entire valve surface but are more concentrated on the valve face and the mantle edge.Within the cells, the chloroplasts take on an irregularly lobed and disc-shaped appearance, positioned in the peripheral cytoplasm.
