The plants have a color that spans from dark brown to orange-yellowish-brown and grow close to the ground. Their blades have a fan-like shape and tend to overlap. Each blade consists of a central medullary layer enclosed by an outer cortex. In the upper sections, the blades are either smooth-edged or lobed, and they often display variegated patterns with concentric zones. The number of outer cortical cells can vary between the two sides of the blade. Surface hairs are scattered randomly or arranged in concentric lines. These blades are thin, fan-shaped, and they adhere to the substrate, often overlapping in a manner reminiscent of shingles.
