Description:
The fish has a body depth of 2.9–3.4 in SL, with a snout length about 1.8–2.3 in head length. It possesses conical lateral teeth in the jaws, with 4½ scale rows between the lateral line and the base of the middle dorsal fin spines. The inner surface of the pectoral fin base and cheeks is scaleless. In terms of color, the body is grey or brown with scattered irregular dark blotches on the sides. The fins are pale or orangish, and juveniles exhibit an indistinct cross band and a dark blotch between the lateral line and the middle of the pectoral fins. There are usually 8 vertical bands present on the upper half of the body.
