The cells are cylindrical in shape and form chains by connecting through the convex valve face, which aligns with the concave valve face of the adjacent cell. Under light microscopy (LM), the valves do not display visible markings, but they do feature short spines at the border between the valve face and the mantle, which can only be observed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The cells have a low silicification level, and the valve and girdle structures are not discernible in water mounts. Many small, rounded, plate-like chloroplasts are present in each cell. Resting spores have been identified and consist of two unequal valves enclosed within an auxospore. However, these resting stages are primarily observed in cultured specimens.
