The cells have a cylindrical shape, and the valves are more or less convex, occasionally almost flat, but they always feature a depression in the middle. The cells are organized in straight, more or less stiff or loose chains, and the intercalary bands take on a collar-like shape, varying considerably in number. The surface of the cell mantle is delicately areolated, with approximately 18-20 areolae in a 10 µm span. Sometimes, these areolae can be quite challenging to observe, and they are arranged in a two-line system with the lines intersecting each other. Marginal spines or threads are present, with around 7-8 of them in a 10 µm area. Resting spores and auxospores have not been reported for this species.
