The fish is characterized by a sharp, strong spine projecting anteriorly from the upper edge of each eye, a feature true for all species in the genus. Additionally, there is a second pair of spines extending posteriorly from the posteroventral edge of the carapace, which is a generic characteristic. The caudal fin is greatly elongate, ranging from one-half to two-thirds of the carapace length. In terms of coloration, the body is yellowish-brown with light blue spots on the sides. The dorsal, anal, and pectoral fins are pale, and the caudal fin is yellowish with light blue spots.
