Young thalli are vesicular, attaching to the substrate and become hollow with perforations. Mature thalli separate from the substrate and grow into a huge reticulate network with rounded pores; reticulate thalli are very thin, measuring between 250 and 300?m in thickness. Cortex and medulla make up the network; the cortex has small, quadrate, pigmented cells that have a diameter of 8–10?m, while the medulla is made up of multiple layers of massive, colorless, parenchymatous cells that have a diameter of 70–30?m. Colorless hairs are arranged in shallow depressions on the surface of thalli. The color is yellow-brown.
