Thallus: 1-3 mm diameter branches above, one to numerous terete, irregularly and typically profusely branched axes 2-10 mm below. Older branches and axes occasionally bared below. Hold fast discoid, epilithic, 2–5 mm in diameter. Structure of a medulla of 8–20 µm diameter filaments that are somewhat robust and located close to branch apices. 10–40 cm in height. Thallus is colored from brown to purple.
