The Halistemma rubrum colony attains an impressive length of approximately two meters. Its lateral projections are not prominently developed, being rather short, and there is a median lappet or lobe between these lateral extensions. This median lappet contains a pedicular canal at its center. The dorsal and ventral radial canals are short and straightforward, originating from the pedicular canal at a point two-thirds of the distance from the ostium. The presence of a mouth plate may vary. Male and female gonodendra are situated at the bases of the palpons. The palpons are active and carry small nematocysts. The bracts are abundant and cover the entire siphosome, resembling leaf-like structures. They are thin and have three small distal teeth.
