The valves of this diatom species have a slightly sigmoid shape and are approximately parallel-sided, with rather obtuse ends. They typically measure between 65-145 µm in length and 12-15 µm in width. The median position is generally maintained, although it may be slightly displaced toward the concave side at the ends of the sternum. The central fissures exhibit abrupt, opposite deflections toward the convexity of the corresponding half of the raphe sternum. This defines the species as isomorphic, as the fissures cut across the longitudinal striae. The central area is roughly rhombic in shape and is rotated, sometimes displaying coarse “granules” under a light microscope. The terminal areas are triangular and located in a lateral position. In terms of apical structure, there is a broad band of 2-3 rows of areolae that encircle the apex, continuing as a series of small foramina.
