Description:
The body of this species is oblong, with an evenly convex dorsal profile of the head. There are 2–3 pairs of moderate canines in front of each jaw, conical teeth at the sides, and fine teeth within. The outer surface of the maxilla is smooth. The caudal fin is only moderately forked, with the median rays much longer than the eye diameter, and there are 14 pectoral fin rays. In terms of coloration, the fish is silvery grey-blue, becoming silvery white ventrally, with fins that are yellow to orange. In young specimens, the head and body have 5–8 irregular dark bars, while in adults, remnants of bands are usually present.
