The cells are large and have a curved pervalvar axis, which leads to the formation of closely spaced spiraling chains. The valve face of these cells is flat but slightly rounded at the margins. A stout marginal spine arises from the valve margin, fitting into a depression on the adjacent valve. Within the cells, there are numerous small, elliptic chloroplasts. The nucleus is centrally located and positioned close to the cell wall.
